By default, your host file contains only your local hostname but you can easily add to it. A URL or hostname does not even have to really exist on the public Internet for you to add it to the host file. Only your localhost is typically mapped by default on your Mac and you rely on the public Domain Name System DNS to point most websites at the correct website.
